Newfields: The Art of Nature

Learn about the Newfields art museum and their new exhibition!

There is no denying that art and nature tend to go hand in hand. Whether it be Monet’s pastel waterlilies or Van Gogh’s vibrant sunflowers – nature’s beauty is something artists endeavor to capture. This is exactly what makes Newfields such a beautiful place. With its expansive grounds, and impressive collection, Newfileds has found a way to successfully merge art and nature into a beautiful harmony – something which would make both Monet and Van Gogh proud. To experience this beautiful merger, one need look no further than the newest Newfields exhibition; Summer Wonderland: Spectacular Creatures.

In collaboration with the Italian art collective Crackling Art, the Newfields campus has become host to some fantastic critters. The brightly colored sculptures decorate the museum and its surrounding grounds, creating an inviting and interactive atmosphere which everyone can enjoy! From snails to marvelous meercats, there is much to see. Not only are the sculptures spectacular but their presence encourages guests to explore the whole of the museum – they act as assets to the wonderful gardens and beautiful Lily house, while they also add some extra fun to the galleries. However, beyond the colorful façade, there is also an important message backing the instillation of these fantastic beasts.

Each animal was made from recycled plastic, and their presence at the museum stands as a reminder for all of us to accept our role as stewards of this Earth. These sculptures are a fun and simple way to make a big statement. Environmental issues can be a touchy subject, but when approached in a friendly manner such as this, the conversation becomes much more open. The fun and light-hearted sculptures stand as a reminder of how precious these animals are – while their medium pays homage to the increasing artificiality of our world. But maybe, just maybe, humans can learn to appreciate nature for the art it is. These sculptures add color and life to the Newfields space, emulating the color and life animals provide for this Earth. Newfields has merged art and nature to create harmony and spread a valuable message. As Van Gogh Said, “If you truly love nature, you will find beauty everywhere.” So, go. Experience the art of nature.
