Man Uses Hedge Clippers To Fight Off Merrillville Pit Bull

A 72-year-old Merrillville man said he was attacked by a neighbor's pit bull just after the dog attacked an 8-year-old girl.

MERRILLVILLE, IN — A Merrillville man is pushing for a neighbor's pit bull to be put down after he and others have been attacked by the dog. Chicago Tribune reported 72-year-old Gregory Sanchez Jr. said he recently had to use hedge scissors to go at the dog "like Edward Scissorhands" when the pit bull ran down his street on June 6, charging at Sanchez. According to the news report, a female neighbor tried calling the dog, which had already attacked her 8-year-old daughter, biting the girl six times after bursting through their door before it attacked Sanchez.

Sanchez brought his concerns about the to dog the Merrillville Town Council earlier this month, saying the same pet has made four similar attacks in recent years.

Merrillville Police Chief Joseph Petruch confirmed these attacks and another on an animal control employee in 2017, adding that the dog was placed under a 10-day quarantine on June 8 after its owner turned in the dog, according to the Tribune.
