5-Year-Old Dies In Hit & Run In Northwest Indiana

The girl was hit as she crossed the street with her sister on Tuesday evening.

MICHIGAN CITY, IN — A 5-year-old girl died in a hit and run crash Tuesday evening in Michigan City. Police said the girl, identified as Delaney Klewer, was crossing Broadway Street at around 5:51 p.m. with her sister. A vehicle heading west on Broadway struck the 5-year-old and immediately fled the scene, according to police.

An officer who arrived on the scene immediately began administering CPR, police said. Klewer was taken to St. Anthony Hospital, where she died of her injuries.

Police said witnesses described the vehicle as a black or dark gray SUV, possibly carrying a spare tire mounted to the rear of the vehicle. "In addition to the Michigan City Police Departments Traffic Division, Chief (Mark) Swistek has also assigned several detectives to this investigation in hopes that the suspect in this case can be quickly identified and brought to justice," police said Wednesday.
