Man Charged In 5-Year-Old's Hit And Run Death

Delaney Klewer died Tuesday after being struck by a vehicle.

MICHIGAN CITY, IN — Michigan City police have made an arrest in the hit and run death of a 5-year-old girl. Police said Delaney Klewer was crossing the street Tuesday with her sister when she was hit and killed. On Thursday, a Trail Creek man was charged after his lawyer contacted police saying he wanted to come forward with information in the case.

Police said an attorney for Marcus R. Scully, 35, contacted authorities Thursday morning saying Scully wanted to provide information on the case. Scully was arrested after being interviewed by police, "at which point information was developed that implicated him as the driver of the suspect vehicle," officials said.

Scully is being held on $15,000 bond, charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.

Michigan City Police Chief Mark Swistek thanked members of the public who contacted police with tips on the hit and run. However, police are investigating a possibly phony tip that came in after the 5-year-old's death.

"An investigation is ongoing into allegations that a member of the public attempted to take advantage of this situation by providing intentional false information to detectives which hindered their investigation into this unfortunate incident," police said Thursday.

A GoFundMe Page has been established to help Delaney's family with funeral costs.
