Man Killed Indiana Doctor For Refusing To Prescribe Opioids: Police
Police said the doctor declined to prescribe the medication for the gunman's wife.

SOUTH BEND, IN — A Mishawaka man fatally shot a South Bend doctor last week before turning the gun on himself, police said. Michael Jarvis, 48, shot Dr. Todd Graham in the parking lot of South Bend Orthopedics after Graham refused to prescribe opioid pain medication to Jarvis' wife, prosecutors told the South Bend Tribune. Jarvis reportedly fled and was later found dead outside a friend's home with two self-inflicted gunshot wounds, police said.
Authorities said Graham refused to prescribe an opioid for Jarvis' wife, who was a new patient at the medical facility and suffered from pain. Shortly after his wife's Wednesday morning appointment, Jarvis returned to the medical complex and argued with Graham in the parking lot before shooting the doctor twice in the head, the Tribune reported.
Jarvis reportedly fled to a friend's home and "gave them indication that he was not going to be around," St. Joseph County Prosecutor Ken Cotter said. The friend contacted police, who found Jarvis dead outside the home.
