Money Falls Out Of Brink Truck On I-70, Police Investigating

Indiana State Police are investigating after money that fell out of a Brink truck on I-70 was taken from the scene on Wednesday.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN -- Indiana State Police are working to recover money they say was stolen on I-70 Wednesday morning when a Brinks armored truck door opened, sending packages of cash falling onto the interstate. ISP says their dispatch center began receiving calls around 9 a.m. about money blowing all over I-70 near Sam Jones Expressway and people trying to catch it.

ISP says that while some money bags remained intact, other bags broke open, blowing throusands of dollars across the east and west bound lanes of I-70.

You can probably guess what happened next. ISP says some unsafe motorists stopped in the middle of I-70 to grab and pocket the money, which was returned to the Brinks employees once troopers arrived on scene.

While these people returned money they had picked up and therefore weren't charged with a crime, ISP says troopers got detailed information from witnesses who reported several others had gathered the loose money and left before officers arrived. State Police detectives are following up on all leads to recover money stolen from the scene.

ISP says it's important for anyone who hasn't returned the money they picked up at the scene to understand they have committed theft, which is a felony offense.

To avoid criminal charges, contact the state police at 317-899-8577 to make arrangements for the money to be recovered. Money may also be returned to the Indiana State Police Post at 8660 East 21st Street any time of day or night.

“People know right from wrong and anyone we track down who kept a dollar of this money will be arrested for theft,” First Sergeant Bill Dalton, Indiana State Police Indianapolis District Investigations Commander, said in a release. “The time to do the right thing and call us to turn in the money is now, because once we knock on your door, you won’t be able to avoid being arrested.”

ISP says there will be increased patrols in the area where the money fell from the truck as citizens are reminded it's an infraction for a vehicle or pedestrians to be stopped or standing on the interstate. Citizens found in this area are subject to being cited.

Police officials say this is an ongoing investigation and the exact amount of money unaccounted for will not be released.
