Sears Holdings To Close 100 Stores, Including Two Indiana Kmarts

Sears Holdings announces plans to close 100 stores around the country, including Indianapolis and Bloomington Kmart locations.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Officials at financially beleaguered Sears Holdings have announced plans to close more than 100 Kmart and Sears stores nationwide, including one in Indianapolis and one in Bloomington, slated for closure in the spring. The Kmart stores located at 3175 West 3rd Street in Bloomington and 5101 E Thompson Road in Indianapolis are expected to close in early April, according to store officials and reports.

To close unprofitable locations in an attempt to transform their business model, officials say Sears Holdings plans to shutter 64 Kmart stores and 39 Sears ones.

Struggling to remain viable amid a growing Internet-based retail landscape, brick-and-mortar stores are increasingly being closed. Last year, U.S. retailers announced plans to shutter nearly 7,000 stores — an exponential increase in announced closures the prior year by 224 percent. Those numbers were compiled by the think tank Fung Global Retail & Tech, which tracks store openings and closures in the U.S.
