13th Street Lane Restrictions Extending East Past Douglas Avenue Starting Monday In Ames

The project will be completed in five phases to allow emergency vehicles access to and from the Ames Fire Station at 1300 Burnett Ave.

May 14, 2021

As work on the first stage of reconstruction of 13th Street continues, lane restrictions will be extended east through Douglas Avenue beginning Monday, May 17, weather permitting. Closure of the two north (westbound) lanes of 13th Street will extend east from Wilson Avenue to just past Douglas Avenue to allow installation of temporary pavement widening in the north lanes. Westbound traffic on 13th Street will continue to be shifted to single-lane traffic in both directions on the south (eastbound) lanes. The south sidewalk, driveway access, and side street access north at Wilson, Clark, Burnett, Kellogg, and Douglas avenues will also be closed.

The temporary widening of the two north lanes is expected to be complete within one week, followed by the start of additional phases of the project.

The City of Ames has contracted with Con-Struct to complete this project, which includes the reconstruction of 13th Street from Wilson to Duff avenues. In addition to new concrete street pavement, the 13th Street project also includes storm and sanitary sewer improvements, water main replacement, residential water transfers, and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) sidewalk ramp improvements.

The project will be completed in five phases to allow emergency vehicles access to and from the Ames Fire Station at 1300 Burnett Ave. At all times, one lane of 13th Street in each direction will remain open to traffic. However, access to side streets will be restricted for safety reasons and to ease potential congestion of the construction zone. Construction is anticipated to be completed in late fall 2021. As with all projects, the actual duration will depend on weather conditions.

All are encouraged to take note of this construction activity in the area and allow extra travel time as delays will occur. Please use alternative routes if available. As always, caution should be exercised when traveling through the construction area.
