2013 Ames Edible Garden Tour

The Ames Edible Garden Tour offers a snapshot of the diversity of Ames’ urban gardens nourishing the people of Ames. Featured gardens include vegetable, fruit, flower, herb—and yes, chicken and hops—production.

These garden hosts are eager to share with novice and expert gardeners alike what can be grown with limited space and resources.

The tour is a great way to highlight the work that many of us in Ames are doing to feed our community.

Please drop by any or all of the gardens on Saturday, September 7th between 12 pm and 4 pm. You may choose to join the organized group bike tour, attend one of the scheduled demonstrations, or wander the route on your own!

If you wish to join a bike tour, there will be an organized bicycle tour of 9 of the gardens departing at noon from Brookside Park (plan to arrive before departure time). Bring water and a snack. Bike tour information is posted on our Ames Edible Garden Tour facebook page and will follow this route: http://goo.gl/maps/pQGC6

Of particular interest is the Food at First garden. The ISU Sustainable Ag Student Association has been growing food there this summer for delivery for the Food at First food pantry and for use in the Food at First community meal program. There are three demonstrations scheduled at different private gardens, as well.

Please note that garden hosts are not prepared to accommodate tour participants within their homes.

The tour is free and open to the public.

Check our Ames Edible Garden Tour facebook page to see photos of what’s growing at the host gardens, more details about the bike tour, and updated demonstration information.
