Ames Man's Sentencing On Sexual Exploitation Postponed

Kevin Muehlenthaler, a former teacher in the North Polk school district, was found guilty last month of three counts of sexual exploitation.

AMES, IA — An Ames man and former teacher who was convicted of three counts of sexual exploitation by a school employee last month will be sentenced in January. The sentencing for Kevin Muehlenthaler, 29, was delayed this week, the Ames Tribune reported.

Muehlenthaler was a teacher in the Chariton school district when he was charged in February with four counts of sexual exploitation. In October 2016 a complaint was filed that said the victim, a teacher helper in Muehlenthaler's class, reported a relationship between her and Muehlenthaler had taken place between November 2013 and July 2014, the Tribune story said, adding that sexual encounters took place at Muehlenthaler’s residence, the home of a friend of his, and an Ames hotel.

A jury found Muehlenthaler guilty on three counts last month. Sexual exploitation is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $7,500 per count.
