Ames Mayor And City Council's Bike Ride Is May 15

At Northwestern Avenue, cyclists will turn south to Main Street, then north on Pearle Avenue and back to City Hall.

Ames Mayor John Haila and members of the Ames City Council invite the community to participate in a family-friendly bike ride around Ames, starting and ending at City Hall. The 6.5-mile ride will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 15, in the west parking lot at Ames City Hall, 515 Clark Ave. This year’s route will give participants the opportunity to see some recently completed projects in the city, including the low head dam modifications at North River Valley Park, Homewood Golf Course Clubhouse, and Miracle Playground at Inis Grove Park.

Bicyclists of all ages and experience levels are welcome to join the ride. There is no pre-registration necessary or cost to participate. Bike helmets are strongly encouraged. Bicyclists will be asked to stay in family groups or maintain space to ensure COVID-19 social distancing is observed.

Skunk River Cycles will be on hand before the bike ride to provide quick bike safety checks including tire inspection and inflation, and to check proper bike helmet fitting for adults and children.

Bicyclists will exit the City Hall parking lot onto Sixth Street and travel east to Bandshell Park, then take Carroll Avenue north to East Ninth Street. Cyclists will then take East Ninth Street east to Maxwell Avenue, then north to East 14th Street, east to Meadowlane Avenue, and then south to East 13th Street. At East 13th Street, cyclists will travel east to the North River Valley Park Bike Trail and follow the trail north through Carr Park to Meadowlane Avenue. Cyclists will travel north on Meadowlane Avenue to East 20th Street, then west to Duff Avenue.

At Duff Avenue, cyclists will travel north to Broadmoor Avenue, then north to Inis Grove Park/Miracle Park and through the park on the trail west back to Duff Avenue. Turning north on Duff Avenue, cyclists will continue to 30th Street, then west to Northwestern Avenue.

At Northwestern Avenue, cyclists will turn south to Main Street, then north on Pearle Avenue and back to City Hall.
