City Manager Steve Schainker has announced the launch of a national search for the next Ames Police Chief. The position has been posted on multiple online platforms, shared with public safety professional networks to reach a diverse population of candidates, and is available on the City of Ames website (www.CityOfAmes.org/jobs). During the recruitment, there will be an opportunity for the public to meet the finalists and ask questions.

“We are seeking a progressive professional to lead an organization who is committed to the principles of procedural justice, accountability, and transparency in our continuous quest to build trust and legitimacy for the Police Department,” Schainker said.
The application deadline will close soon. It is anticipated that the finalists for the position will be invited to Ames in June. During the on-site interview process, public sessions will be scheduled to meet with the finalists. Once candidates become finalists, their names, background information, education, work history, and specific dates for the public meetings will be shared with the public.

“The City of Ames has a long tradition of inviting public feedback during all of our top leadership recruitments,” said City Manager Schainker. “We appreciate citizen feedback because the information gathered from numerous sources assists us in making the best choice for our organization and this community.”
It is anticipated a new Police Chief would join the City of Ames this summer. The Police Chief position was vacated with the retirement of Chuck Cychosz in July of 2020.
