Neal Named New Transit Director

After facilitating a national recruitment, the Ames Transit Board announced today that Interim Director Barbara Neal has accepted the position of CyRide Director. She begins her new role immediately.

“Selecting a creative, smart, progressive director was our Board’s mission, and we are delighted to have Barb guiding CyRide into the future,” said Ames Transit Board Vice President Liz Jeffrey. “Barb’s dedication is evident in her decades of experience. She brings so much to the organization, and we look forward to working together for the betterment of public transit.”

The Ames public transit system, CyRide, is funded by the City of Ames, Iowa State University administration, and ISU Student Government. It is run by a board of directors representing the funding agencies and riders. Under the direction of the Transit Board, the Transit Director plans, directs, coordinates, and ensures the efficiency of all fiscal, operational, maintenance, and personnel activities for CyRide. CyRide operates 13 fixed routes, a Dial-A-Ride service for persons with disabilities, and a late night service called Moonlight Express. Former Transit Director Sheri Kyras retired this spring after more than 10 years of service.

Neal has worked at the transit agency since 1991. Prior to taking on the interim position, Neal served as the Assistant Transit Director since 2016. From 2004 to 2016, Neal was the CyRide Operations Supervisor, and from 1991 to 2004, she was the Assistant Operations Supervisor. Neal has a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Iowa State University.
