Oktoberfest, Hot Buttered Rum, Run for the Roses in Ames This Weekend

Here's just a handful of events happening in Ames this weekend.

Hot Buttered Rum a San Franciso-based quintet, performed at DG's Tap House at 11 p.m. Thursday. Check them out here:  www.hotbutteredrum.net.

Ames Oktoberfest is from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday in the Main Street Cultural Arts District. Events include a Craft Brew Contest and tasting, Gutentag Games, Polka Dancing and a performance by the Nadas. The day begins with the Farmers' Market. Tickets are $10. ISU Planetarium will host two shows about what one can see in the night sky. Shows are 6:30 p.m., 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Friday. Find the Planetarium at Physics Hall in Ames. Line up 15 minutes before show times for free tickets.

Run for the Roses an annual run to raise funds for arthritis research grants is set for 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Sunday. The race begins at the Ames Middle School, 3915 Mortensen Road. Learn more about the race at: http://www.runningintheusa.com/race/View.aspx?RaceID=29967

The Ames Fire Department will host an open house from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, at Fire Station No. 1, 1300 Burnett Ave. People will be able to explore fire trucks, see Sparky the Fire Dog and Freddy the Fire Truck, and learn more about fire safety. The open house is timed with Fire Prevention Week. This year's theme is “Prevent Kitchen Fires.”

Singer Caroline Brooks will perform at the Maintenance Shop  8 p.m. Sunday. Brooks will open for Stephen Kellogg. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $17 in advance and $2 more the day of the show. Students receive discounts. Learn more at the Student Union Activities Board site.
