Scam Targets Ames Utility Customers

City warns of scam requesting money over the phone.

The City of Ames is warning residents of a utility scam after two businesses received calls from individuals purportedly collecting delinquent utility payments for the City.

People called two Ames businesses recently and told them their utility bills were delinquent and that their service would be disconnected and attempted to collect payments over the phone, according to a release from the city.

However the city would never request payment over the phone for any bill. Anyone receiving a similar call should refuse to provide any information and hang up.
