Anyone who suffered wind or water damage since storms rolled through Story County May 19, might be eligible for disaster assistance through the Iowa Individual Assistance Program.

Story County was included in a recent disaster declaration Friday May 31.

The individual assistance program provides grants of up to $5,000 for households at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty guidelines. (That's a maximum annual income of $39,060 for a family of three.) Eligible purchases include home and car repairs, clothing, food and the expense of temporary housing. Find more information on the individual program at “Disaster Assistance” link on the Iowa Department of Human Services website: www.dhs.iowa.gov.

Gov. Terry Branstad included Story County in the disaster proclamation primarily because of significant damage to secondary roads caused by flash flooding. This will allow the county to use state resources to cover the costs of repairs.

Localized flooding and heavy rainfall washed gravel from Story County roads in at least 100 places.

Keith Morgan of the Story County Emergency Management Agency said the county is still putting a map together.

“The amount of run off in the fields and across the roads (was) pretty significant,” Morgan said.
