Water Main Break Closes Sixth Street
AMES, Iowa – A water main break at the intersection of Seventh Street and Douglas Avenue has closed Sixth Street from Duff Avenue to Kellogg Avenue for repairs. Residents and businesses affected by the water main break include addresses along Sixth Street from Carroll Avenue to Clark Avenue, as well as those along Douglas Avenue from Sixth Street to Seventh Street.
Because the water main damaged was large, other Ames water customers could experience rusty water issues. Residents who notice discolored water should run the cold water tap for a few minutes until the water is clear. Also, avoid using hot water for things like dishwashing or laundry if water is discolored. If discolored water causes staining problems, rust remover is available free of charge at the City Hall information desk, the Water Plant, all fire stations, or by calling 515.239.5550 during business hours, or 515.239.5150 after 3 p.m.
Sixth Street will remain closed for today. Vehicles should avoid the area and use detours around Sixth Street.
