YMCA to Host MLK Prayer Breakfast

Olympic gold medalist Jackie Joyner-Kersee will be the keynote speaker for a community breakfast put on by the YMCA in honor of Dr. King.

The YMCA of Greater Des Moines will be putting on a public event on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Cameron Nicholson, Executive Director of the John R. Grubb YMCA near Drake University, shared the following information about the event:

Date: Monday, January 19, 2015

Time: 7:30am to 9:30am

Location: Iowa Event Center - Community Choice Credit Union Convention Center

The Mission: To celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and to promote his message for peace, justice and righteousness.

The Method: A one-day event on MLK Jr. Day, the Y will gather various community residents, leaders and agencies to join in fellowship through a breakfast meal, keynote address, youth choir, and community leader recognitions.

-A Youth Summit for 200 teenagers to promote giving back through community service and creating a path to success.
-A community service project partnering with Meals From The Heartland to package 40,000 meals for the hungry.

-An anticipated 200 volunteers from the breakfast attendees, Youth Summit attendees and the greater Des Moines community.

The Message: King encouraged his congregation to seek greatness, but to do so through service and love.

The Hope:

  • To acknowledge and recognize (3) local residents and/or leaders that have modeled Dr. King’s legacy.
  • To have an inter-generational, inspiring and uplifting morning service to encourage attendees to make a difference every day.
  • To have 750 attendees at the event to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy.
  • To raise funds to support the YMCA Y-Readers program that addresses summer learning loss for low-income, minority, inner-city students in 1st-5th grades.

Tickets - $30 or you can sponsor a table.
