Alternative Fuel Station, Only the Second of Its Kind in Iowa, Coming to Cedar Falls

A federal Department of Energy database says this would only be the second compressed natural gas station in Iowa, the first being in Grimes.

Kwik Trip, the Wisconsin based chain of convenience stores, announced today that it will bring an alternative fuel, compressed natural gas, to its Kwik Star station in Cedar Falls.

A federal Department of Energy database says this would only be the second compressed natural gas station in Iowa, the first being in Grimes.

According to the Iowa Clean Cities Coalition, compared with gasoline and diesel, compressed natural gas can produce significantly lower carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, nonmethane hydrocarbon, particulate matter, and other toxic emissions, as well as greenhouse gas emissions.

Natural gas vehicles are not available on a large scale in the U.S.—only a few models are currently offered for sale, according to www.fueleconomy.gov. However, conventional gasoline and diesel vehicles can be retrofitted for compressed natural gas.

The Cedar Falls store is located at 7500 Nordic Drive. Completion for the new compressed natural gas system is set for early July.
