Obituary: Drake Martin

Drake Martin, a long-time employee of the University of Northern Iowa, died in a fall while hiking in Backbone State Park.

Drake Evans Martin, 62, of Cedar Falls, died Saturday, July 28, 2012, from a fall at Backbone State Park near Strawberry Point, Iowa. He was born November 26, 1949 in Cedar Falls, the son of Clarence and Margaret Louella (Evans) Martin. Drake married Carolyn Seiter on May 20, 1989 at Overland Park, Kansas, and they later divorced. He graduated in 1968 from Foothills High School in Sacramento, California, received his B.A. in Journalism/Advertising from the University of Texas-Austin, and earned his M.A. in College Student Affairs from Bowling Green University. Drake worked at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and has worked at the University of Northern Iowa since 1981 as Assistant Director of Residence/Education.

Survivors include his two daughters, Riley Margaret Martin and Dylan Nicole Martin, both of Cedar Falls; his mother, Margaret Martin, of Granite Bay, California; two brothers, Dwight Martin of Granite Bay and Douglas (Stacey) Martin of Hanford, California; two sisters, Dianne (Richard) Schroeder of Citrus Heights, California and Dana (James) Mizell of Sacramento, California, and eleven nieces and nephews.

Drake was preceded in death by his father and a sister, Dawn Martin, in infancy.

Services will be 10:30 am Friday, August 3, 2012, at Orchard Hill Church and a Memorial Celebration at 3:30 pm Friday at the University of Northern Iowa Commons. Visitation will be 3—7:00 pm Thursday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, and one hour before service at Orchard Hill Church.
