Abigail Zapote To Keynote Latino Leadership Banquet In Des Moines

The former undocumented immigrant is now executive director for Latinos for a Secure Retirement in Washington, D.C.

DES MOINES, IA — Abigail Zapote, who represents the collegiate and young adult councils on the national board for the League of United Latin American Citizens, will be the keynote speaker at the LULAC Council 307 annual banquet in Des Moines. The fourth annual Latino Leadership Awards Banquet will be Saturday, Jan 13, at the Holiday Inn-Airport, 6111 Fleur Drive.

Zapote, executive director for Latinos for a Secure Retirement in Washington, D.C., is a former undocumented immigrant whose status sparked her future career in social justice. She came to the United States in 1997.

Zapote is serving her third term on LULAC’s national board. In her job she leads efforts to protect Social Security, strengthen Medicare, increase pension access and improve financial literacy for Latinos of all ages.

“Abi has been very active in inspiring and rallying our youth to become vocal and involved with their communities and the political process,” said Joe Enriquez Henry, national LULAC vice president of the Midwest and banquet chairman. “We hope her energy will contribute to our desires to build and protect our community and create more activism among our youth.”

The banquet reception is at 5:30 p.m., followed by a dinner, awards ceremony and evening entertainment. LULAC will recognize nine people who have worked to improve the lives of Latinos living in Iowa and advocated for the Latino community.

Banquet tickets cost $50 for adults and $20 for seniors and youths 18 and younger. They are available through LULAC’s website, or mail checks made payable to LULAC #307 Leadership Banquet to 2463 E. Highview Drive, Des Moines, IA 50320.
