Alert: Wind Advisory Continues Overnight

Wind gusts will remain strong through Tuesday and the National Weather Service warns driving could be hazardous in much of the state.

DES MOINES, IA — The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory this afternoon for most of the state, with the most severe and sustained winds expected in an area from the far northern counties and extending south to and including the Des Moines metro area. The advisory continues until 3 a.m. Tuesday.

The weather service said sustained northwest winds of 3o mph to 40 mph are expected, with gusts of 45 mph to 50 mph. Winds will diminish toward dawn but will remain strong through Tuesday with gusts of 35 mph to 40 mph.

Light snow also is expected in northern portions of the state with little to no accumulation.

The advisory indicates that travel could be most hazardous for high-profile vehicles. In addition, lightweight and unsecured objects — including holiday decorations — could be blown away. Drivers should remain cautious.
