Child Calls 911 To Report Father Assaulting Mother

The suspect, who had a rifle in the home, faces charges of domestic abuse assault and interference.

DES MOINES, IA — A man arrested after an hourlong standoff at his home Sunday remains in the Polk County Jail tonight on charges of domestic abuse assault with intent or display of a weapon and interference with officials acts causing bodily injury. Bond for Fabian Velazquez-Montano is set at $3,000.

Police were called to the suspect's home at 802 E. County Line Road on the city's south side about 4 p.m. Sunday. WHO-TV reported the man's child had called 911 to say his father was assaulting his mother with a weapon.

When police arrived, the woman was outside. Her injuries were reported to be not serious. Velazquez-Montano, 35, was in the home. Police said he refused to come out and only did so after an hour, then ran back into the home with police in pursuit, WHO reported.

Velazquez-Montano was arrested after a struggle, WHO reported, and police found a rifle, loaded magazine and other ammunition in a bedroom of the trailer.
