Des Moines Fire And Police Departments Reiterate Fireworks Rules For The City

Des Moines, Iowa — Friday, June 25, 2021 — With Independence Day around the corner, and fireworks stands open for business, the Des Moines Fire and Police Departments want to remind Des Moines residents that the use of recreational fireworks is prohibited within Des Moines City Limits.

"This year especially with the drought, there’s an enhanced risk of fires,” said Des Moines Fire Marshal Jonathan Lund. “We ask that residents be respectful and not shoot fireworks that put themselves, their neighbors, and nearby property at risk."

Last year, the Des Moines Fire Department responded to a significant house fire caused by fireworks and says combined with conditions this year, they hope they don’t see an increase.

“You need a significant open space to shoot fireworks and there aren’t many of those within the City of Des Moines that are large enough so that ash, debris, and sparks don’t put structures at risk,” Lund said.

Des Moines Police officers are authorized to cite residents who break the law setting fireworks off.

“When we do have the necessary evidence or witness cooperation to press charges, the citation is over $600 which is a hefty price to pay for setting off fireworks,” Des Moines Police Sergeant Paul Parizek said. “But even beyond that, it’s about being a good neighbor when fireworks can cause distress for our residents and their pets.”
