East Village In Des Moines Is New Home To West Elm Store Featuring Local Artistans' Work
West Elm Des Moines will offer home goods for modern living and showcase work by seven area designers and makers in its downtown store.

West Elm, a branch of the Williams Sonoma family, will become the newest retail business in Des Moines’ East Village neighborhood next week. The store will showcase products from seven Iowa-based designers and makers, along with fall furnishings and decor in the Williams Sonoma brand. West Elm, located at 219 E. Grand Ave., Suite 101, also offers design, installation and registry services.
The West Elm Des Moines store used reclaimed materials from barns around the Midwest and corrugated metal roofing, hardwoods and hand-split wood lath in creating the Iowa-focused business, according to a news release.
Local artisans are featured in every West Elm store, which has grown to more than 85 locations in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, the UK and the Middle East, according to the company’s website. The seven artisans taking part in the West Elm Local collection in Des Moines are:

- Siberian Soap Co., an Ames maker of handcrafted, plant-based and nature-inspired soaps.
- Woody’s Scrap Works, a West Des Moines maker of custom handcrafted wood furniture and decor.
- Iowa Parklands, bandanas and accessories with state trail and park maps, based in Des Moines.
- Kelsey Lampe, abstract prints painted in Des Moines.
- Libby Burns, pins and prints with hand-drawn illustrations made in Des Moines.
- Overprint Co., linen napkins and room fragrance sprays made in Des Moines .
- The Red Door Press, letterpress prints and designs created in Des Moines.

West Elm opened in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 2002 and offers unique, affordable designs for modern living with a mission of harnessing the power of design and human connection to enrich lives, according to the company’s website. To celebrate the store’s opening at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, a limited edition tote bag designed by Des Moines-based artist Bozz Prints will be available to the first 300 shoppers making a $50 minimum purchase.
