First MEGA SCRUB Of 2021 Provides Big Opportunity For Des Moines Residents

Des Moines, Iowa — Friday, April 16, 2021 — Tomorrow, Hoover High School’s parking lot will be full. Instead of students’ cars however, it will be full of large roll-off dumpsters that will be waiting to be filled by hundreds of Des Moines residents at the first 2021 MEGA SCRUB event hosted by the City of Des Moines Public Works Department.

"These events are the most anticipated of our SCRUB season,” Public Works Director Jonathan Gano said. “That’s because they offer a great chance for residents who are in the middle of spring cleaning or working on projects that produce a lot of waste to improve their property and get rid of things for free. Typically, we see hundreds of cars go through each of our neighborhood MEGA SCRUB events."

While the City hosts SCRUB events every month from March through November, the four MEGA SCRUB events are an opportunity for residents to dispose of an expanded list of items for free, including bulk items, appliances, household hazardous waste, and tires.

The MEGA SCRUB event will be from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hoover High School (4800 Aurora Ave.) and is open to Des Moines residents only. Proof of residency is required and is accepted in the form of photo ID or a current utility bill.

• Floor care products
• Gasoline and kerosene
• Glues
• Light bulbs: high efficiency only: SFLs, ballast, high intensity discharge
• Motor oil
• Oil filters
• Oven cleaner
• Paints: Oil based only. NO LATEX!

• Roofing tar
• Rust removers
• Sharps: must be contained in detergent bottles or sharps containers (not milk jugs or pop bottles). Lids must also be taped.
