Get Involved with the Iowa Engineering Society
Billy Pisanout Noy writes about the Iowa Engineering Society (IES) and the benefits it offers to engineers in the Des Moines area.

There are a lot of great ways for budding engineers to get involved in Des Moines and the greater state of Iowa, as a whole. One of the best ways is the Iowa Engineering Society (IES). The IES has existed since 1889 and has successfully adapted and evolved to meet the ever-changing and growing challenges facing engineers in their important profession.
The mission of IES is, according to their site, to “promote ethical, competent, and licensed engineering and to enhance the professional, social, and economic well-being of our members.” The members of this society come from all walks of life and practices. In fact, the community boasts President Herbert Hoover as a former member and a number of the Deans of Iowa’s engineering colleges have been among the ranks in the organization.
The Iowa Engineering Society is the only organization in Iowa that actively advocates for professional engineers. They inform their members on how to protect their profession, job, and the public's safety from groups looking to take away a piece of their livelihood. IES also helps keep their members on the cutting edge of technology by providing a myriad of educational opportunities. In fact, Iowa was the first state in the United States to require continuing education for engineering professionals!

IES also partners with MathCounts, The American Engineering Campaign, Engineers Week, Zoom Into Engineering and several other state and national programs to help get young people involved in engineering and learn more about this great profession. They do a great job at working closely with the local engineering colleges in Iowa.
IES also offers the opportunity for people to identify engineers in their community for a variety of awards, including the ANSON MARSTON AWARD, the VOICE OF THE ENGINEER AWARD, and the YOUNG ENGINEER AWARD.

The Iowa Engineering Society also offers an annual conference, which is a great way for people to get involved and stay up to date on the engineering profession in Iowa and around the nation. To learn more about IES and possibly become a member, visit their website and learn about their membership!
