Holiday Closings 2017: Schedules For Des Moines Metro Area

Schools are out, Christmas and New Year's are quickly approaching and everything from bus schedules to bank hours will change.

Many businesses and government offices will have reduced hours and closures due to the Christmas and New Year's holidays. Here are the schedules that will be in effect:

Animal shelters: The Animal Rescue League of Iowa will be closed Christmas Day and New Year's Day. It will close at 4 p.m. Christmas Eve and its regular time of 6 p.m. New Year's Eve.

Banks: Banks are closed Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve as they fall on Sundays. All area banks also will be closed Christmas Day and New Year's

Buses: DART service in the metro area will operate a shortened weekday bus schedule on Sunday, Dec. 24, ending at 8:40 p.m. Schedule Information phones will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and the Customer Service Window at DART Central Station will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. DART Central Station will be open until 9 p.m. Administrative offices will be open until 5 p.m. There is no bus service on Christmas Day or New Year's Day. Regular weekday service schedules will be followed on Dec. 31.

Driver licensing: All Iowa Department of Transportation business locations will be closed Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Most business locations will resume normal operations on the Tuesday following the holiday closure. In addition, all Iowa DOT driver’s license service centers will be closed Dec. 23 and Dec. 30. Many people may be able to complete driver’s license business online at www.iowadot.gov/ or at one of the conveniently located self-service kiosks. Kiosk users should check the host location's holiday schedule to determine hours and availability.

Garbage collection: There will be no collections on Christmas Day or New Year's Day. In most area communities, curbside garbage collection will be delayed one day both weeks, with Friday collections on Saturdays. Check with area service providers for regulations and dates for disposing of trees and recycling.

Government offices: All City Hall offices will be closed Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Des Moines, Johnston and West Des Moines City Halls also will be closed Dec. 26. Urbandale City Hall also is closed Friday, Dec. 22.

Libraries: All six Des Moines Public Libraries as well as the Ankeny, Waukee and West Des Moines libraries will be closed Dec. 24 through 26 and on Jan. 1. The Johnston library will be closed Dec. 24 and 25 and Jan. 1. Urbandale library will be closed Dec. 24 through 26 and Dec 31 and Jan. 1.

Mail: U.S. Postal Service mail will not be delivered Christmas Day or New Year's Day and post offices will be closed. Priority Mail Express and Amazon packages will be delivered on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.

Schools: Classes resume Jan. 2 in Urbandale and West Des Moines school districts and Jan. 3 in Des Moines, Johnston and Waukee. Ankeny schools return Jan. 3 with the normal one-hour late Wednesday start.
