Iowa's Drivers Are Best In The Nation: Survey

On a list of states with the worst drivers, Iowa gets good marks.

Stick another feather in our cap and call us the best drivers in the country. In a national survey ranking the states by those with the worst drivers, Iowa came in last for 2017.

Iowa actually ranked 51st — adding Washington, D.C., to the mix — when measuring the worst drivers in the country, CarInsuranceComparison.com found.

The worst drivers, according to the survey, are in Montana, followed by Arizona, Louisiana, Texas and Nevada to round out the top five slots.

The survey ranked states based on fatality rates, "failure to obey" laws for things such as seatbelt use and having a valid license, careless driving, drunken driving, and speeding.

Iowa had sat at the 48th worst — "fourth best in the nation" sounds better — in the company's surveys for the past two years before being listed as the safest driving state for 2017. This year, Iowa's best rank was in the category "failure to obey," with only three states achieving a better score. The lowest score for Iowa came in the fatality rate, with a place of 34th.

CarInsuranceComparison.com used data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for its survey and noted that the National Centers for Disease Control ranked the U.S. 19th among nations with similar income when it comes to destructive driving.

North Dakota was the only Midwest state to crack the top 10 among worst states, coming in at 10th. Among neighboring states, Minnesota was the next best state nationally, ranking 50th. Nebraska ranked 40th, Illinois 23rd and Missouri was 19th worst in the country.
