Two Arrested In Des Moines' First Homicide Of 2018: UPDATE

First-degree murder charges have been filed against two people in the shooting death of Cory Channon.

DES MOINES, IA — Two arrests have been made in connection with the city's first homicide this year. Des Moines police say William Edgar Burton III, 45, and Crystal Raye Purdy, 36, both of Des Moines, are in custody in connection with the shooting death of Cory Channon.

Police received a call at 11:28 p.m. Tuesday regarding a shooting at 1332 21st St. They arrived to find Channon, 39, of Des Moines with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Around midnight, a suspect contacted the police department and surrendered into their custody, Sgt. Paul Parizek said. That person remained in custody throughout the morning as the department continued to investigate.

Police did not indicate the circumstances that led to Channon's death. Burton and Purdy have been charged with first-degree murder and are being held without bond in the Polk County Jail.
