Schools Delayed By Extreme Wind Chills: Des Moines Weather

Can we put up with one more day of cold? Warmer air will bring temperatures in the upper 30s on Wednesday.

DES MOINES, IA — Continued bitter cold this morning and wind chills ranging from -10 to -25 have caused a delay in numerous schools. A wind chill advisory remains in effect until noon.

The National Weather Service Des Moines office says after one more cold day in the single digits to teens today, warmth will begin to filter into Iowa as southerly winds return.

Temperatures will be 30 to nearly 40 degrees warmer by Friday compared to today, with highs in the upper 30s to mid 40s across the state.

School Delays

For this morning, the following schools are on a two-hour delay and no morning preschool: Ankeny, Bondurant-Farrar, Des Moines parochial, Southeast Polk, Johnston, North Polk, Saydel, Waukee, West Des Moines.

Dowling Catholic High School will start at 9:30 a.m. Des Moines Public Schools will begin on time.
