Sunday Snow Followed By Cold, Strong Winds: Des Moines Weather

Well-below-zero wind chills and bitter cold temperatures are back in the Des Moines-area forecast through Tuesday.

DES MOINES, IA — Snow that moved through the metro area and much of Iowa Sunday evening with accumulations of up to 2 inches could continue into Monday morning. The highest totals will likely be in northeastern Iowa.

Temperatures will plummet Monday as strong, northwesterly winds overspread Iowa. Winds will be from the northwest at around 20 to 30 mph, with gusts to 35 mph. Temperatures will struggle to stay above 0 through much of the state. Combining the strong winds with bitterly cold temperatures, will yield wind chill values of -25 to -35 across northern Iowa, and -15 to -25 across central to southern Iowa on Monday.

Frostbite can occur in as little as 15 to 30 minutes to exposed skin. If heading outdoors for any length of time — including shoveling — wear multiple layers of clothing, a hat and gloves. Do not leave pets outside for prolonged periods of time.
