Statewide New Year's Day Hikes Canceled By Frigid Temperatures
The First Day Hikes are planned in every state as part of a national program to get people outside to enjoy parks and natural settings.

DES MOINES, IA — With temperatures predicted to dip well below zero for the next three days, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources announced today it has decided to cancel First Day Hikes at Iowa's state parks. The events had been scheduled for New Year’s Day as part of a national program.
“While it’s a great disappointment to us to cancel this event, the safety of park visitors comes first,” said Todd Coffelt, State Parks Bureau Chief. “We know that frostbite can set in fairly quickly at those cold temperatures, so we are using caution in making this decision.”
2018 will be the seventh year for the program, which is conducted in all 50 states and includes hikes for all levels, from beginners to experienced hikers.

“We definitely will plan on hosting hikes again next year, and anyone can visit state parks during the winter and enjoy the beautiful scenery that’s unique to this time of year,” Coffelt said.
