Tiny Trees Orders Take Off After Derecho In Des Moines

Des Moines, Iowa — Thursday, May 6, 2021 — In the first Tiny Trees event since the pandemic canceled the 2020 edition, Des Moines’ Forestry Division’s yearly event set a record with over 2,100 Tiny Tree Orders. Forestry Project Manager Shane McQuillan says that over 10,000 trees are due to be picked up this Saturday at the Polk County River Place (2309 Euclid Ave.) between 8 a.m. and noon.

"There’s been a pent-up demand for trees since we weren’t able to hold the event last year,” McQuillan said. “Add to that a lot of residents lost trees in last August’s derecho, and we’re seeing a lot of excitement for this year’s Tiny Trees program. It’s going to feel great to be able to give out thousands of trees that will help grow Des Moines’ vibrant tree canopy in the years to come."

Des Moines residents had the opportunity to order up to five free “Tiny Trees” through the City program, and will be able to pick up their orders Saturday morning. Available species this year included Red Bud, Elderberry, River Birch, White Oak and White Pine.

“We get a lot of benefits from our trees in Des Moines,” Public Works Director Jonathan Gano said. “From air quality, to stormwater retention, heat absorption, property values and general aesthetics, there’s a reason Des Moines is known for its trees and we are proud to continue growing our urban forest.”
