Did you know that only 15 percent of today’s employees are engaged in their jobs? Employees who are engaged are committed to their work, feel passionate about their jobs, and believe they are valuable members of their teams. Disengaged employees are less productive and cost US businesses some $550 billion each year.

Since employees are an entrepreneur’s most valuable asset, increasing employee engagement should be on every entrepreneur’s to-do list. Here are some effective ways to increase employee engagement in your organization.

One of the most important things you can do as a leader is to ensure that all of your employees are in the right roles for them. People usually enjoy their work more when they are good at it. So, to match each employee with the proper role, take their strengths into account and find the position in which they are most likely to excel.

Train Employees Properly

As mentioned, to be engaged at work, employees must feel like they know what they are doing and that they are doing it well. That means that you should never skimp on training new employees. Also, be sure to train your entire team when you introduce new processes or technology. Training and learning should be continuous and highly valued in your company culture.

Make Sure Each Employee Believes Their Work is Meaningful

If your employees believe that the work they do is meaningful, they are more likely to be engaged, to work hard, and will likely stay with your company for many years. Ask employees how they feel about their work, and if there is anything you can do to make their work more meaningful to them. Don’t forget to mention that the work they do is meaningful to you, too.

Check-in with Employees Regularly

Even if you believe you have a team of engaged employees, it’s essential to check in often. All employees should be able to sit down with their supervisors at least once per week. These meetings provide an opportunity for workers to share what’s on their minds. They also provide managers with the opportunity to give feedback and course-correct as needed.
