Did Johnston Win State Softball Crown?

The Dragons faced two-time champ Dowling Catholic High School in the Class 5A championship game Friday night.

Friday was one long day for the Johnston Dragons' softball team.

First the squad had to finish its semifinal Class 5-A game against the Ottumwa Bulldogs, which was halted because of storms in Fort Dodge Thursday night. The Dragons advanced by defeating Ottumwa, 7-2. 

The Johnston High School softball team lost 5-2 to Dowling Catholic in the Class 5A state championship matchup Friday night in Fort Dodge, according to the Des Moines Register.

Johnston’s Brooke Wilmes gave her team an early lead with a two-run triple in the fourth inning, the newspaper said. Dowling (34-11) tied it with two unearned runs in the fourth. Jessica Bastian hit an RBI double in the fifth and Meaghan McCarthy smashed a two-run homer in the sixth.

Johnston finished the season at 32-12.
