Faith Lutheran Vacation Bible students learn about Nepal, raise money for earthquake relief
Students raise over $340 in coins and dollars for earthquake victims.
One hundred forty students participated in this year’s Vacation Bible School at Faith Lutheran Church in Clive, held June 14-18.
During VBS, which had a Mt. Everest theme, the kids discovered what it means to hold onto God’s mighty power in everyday life. Students made flags with prayers for a mural, sang catchy songs, played teamwork-building games, and participated in Bible-learning activities.
Kids also learned about Nepal, its culture and its role in expeditions to the top of Mt. Everest and adjoining peaks. A characteristic of Nepalese culture are the traditional flags, which fly at many of the camps along the route to the top of Mt. Everest. The people of Nepal believe that as the wind blows through the prayer flags, it fills the air with positive thoughts and love, bringing it to all people that the wind encounters.
Each day the kids made their own prayer flags: for people in need close to home and those far away (green foothills), for those facing challenges (blue mountain), for those who need healing (white snow), Thanksgiving for God’s unstoppable love (yellow sun), and gratitude that God’s love has room for all (blue sky).
Kids also learned how what we see as a small amount of money can greatly impact the people in Nepal. They raised $340.97 in coins and dollars which will be sent to Lutheran Disaster Response to help those affected by the recent earthquakes there.
