From The Mayor's Desk: Great Stuff Happening in Johnston
March has just begun and the City Council has already finalized its strategic plan and budget for the next year.

From Mayor Paula Dierenfeld:
March has just begun and the City Council has already finalized its strategic plan and budget for the next year. The financial condition of our city is strong due to the conservative fiscal decisions made in the past. We have focused on those things that are the city’s primary responsibilities, like police and fire protection. And we have delivered the services we provide efficiently by limiting staff and redirecting resources as needed.Â
Because we are so financially strong, Johnston taxpayers will see a reduction in their property tax levy by 14 cents this year, from $11.29 per $1000 of taxable valuation to $11.15. Even with a reduction in the tax rate, the budget for the next fiscal year includes funding in key areas reflecting our strong commitment to meeting the priority needs of our community.Â

Construction of the new satellite Fire Station is complete and it will be staffed and fully operational soon. Also significant progress has been made on the new Public Safety Building that will serve as the main facility for our Police and Fire Departments. The Public Safety Building will be completed in February 2014.  The budget includes funding for additional police officers and firefighters, and the training and equipment they need to do their jobs.Â
Recreational opportunities for Johnston’s residents will also be expanded. Terra Lake Park, that has been talked about for years, is about to become a reality.  Construction of the park will begin this year and will take three years to complete. When finished, Terra Lake Park will serve as a regional attraction with a 10-acre lake and other unique features incorporating the natural environment that surrounds it.  The construction of Beaver Drive Trail will also begin this year. Another three-year project, the Beaver Drive Trail will provide access for trail users at our city’s northern limits, connecting them to the rest of Johnston’s 30-mile trail system. The infrastructure needs of Johnston residents on our east side are also a priority. Many neighborhoods east of Merle Hay Road developed at a time when city services were not available. While some progress has been made through the years, many of the neighborhoods lack adequate streets, storm sewers, sanitary sewer and fire protection. We are working with the residents to develop plans that maintain the rich character of their neighborhoods while addressing their infrastructure needs.
The budget also reflects the strategic focus we have placed on the city’s economic development efforts. It is exciting to see the redevelopment that has occurred along the north end of Merle Hay Road as dilapidated houses have been torn down and replaced with new construction. The vision that resulted in those changes has inspired planning that is underway for the south end of Merle Hay Road – at the gateway of our community.Â
A lot of exciting things are planned for Johnston in the year ahead. By working together, we will make Johnston an even better place to live, work and raise a family.
