Hot New Art in June

The Ankeny Art Center heats-up this June with two local artists that feature fine art paintings and sketches.

The Ankeny Art Center presents a new exhibition featuring Kristi Lund Lozier of Des Moines and Susan Colby of Clive. A reception for both artists will be held on Thursday, June 4th from 5-7pm.

The exhibition opens to the public on June 2 and runs through July 29. Both the exhibition and reception are free and open to the public; wine and appetizers will be served at the opening reception.

Kristi Lund Lozier’s exhibit “paper & canvas” will be featured in the main gallery. “My paintings are figurative, fauvist, and hopefully timeless. I paint what I know.” Lozier said. “I try to find a mix of aesthetic representation, in a moment, or a thought, a feeling or an emotion the viewer can connect with.”

A Des Moines native, artist and painter, Lozier graduated from the University of Nevada Reno in 1974 with a double major in Journalism and Art. Lozier’s exhibit will feature several fine art acrylic paintings and a special selection of sketches and drawings.

In the side gallery, Susan Colby will exhibit a series of oil portraits of individuals in their natural expressive poses as well as several paintings inspired by memorial moments, wildlife scenes and tranquil hidden gardens. Colby has studied with Mary Muller, Master PSA, Dr. Janet Heinicke and Jack Wilkes.

“People, movement and life inspire me to paint; capturing an emotion, expression or gesture in action, gives great joy to the painting process and greater joy when the viewer receives the same.” said Colby. “If the viewer is drawn into the painting’s life by association, then I know I have succeeded.”

The Ankeny Art Center is located in a City park at 1520 SW Ordnance Rd off of State St and just east of the John Deere plant. Gallery hours are Tuesday - Friday: 9am-1pm, Thursday: 4pm-7pm and Saturday: 9am-noon.
