After splitting their regular season matchups, the Valley softball team evidently didn't expect the walloping it got Tuesday at the Iowa state softball tournament at the hands of Johnston.
The fifth-ranked Dragons blanked the No. 8 Tigers, 10-0, according to the Des Moines Register, with four first-inning runs and allowing just two hits in a 10-0 win.Â
Johnston (31-11) pitcher Haylee Towers overpowered Valley and didn’t allow a Tiger to pass first base. On the flip side, the Tigers committed five errors, the newspaper said.
Next up for Johnston High School is Ottumwa in the Class 5A State semifinal at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 25, at Harlan Rogers Sports Complex in Fort Dodge. The Bulldogs have a 37-6 record.
Johnston has won 10 straight games and 18 of its past 19, the Register said. The Dragons’ last played in the state semifinals when it won the 2009 Class 4-A state title.
