Johnston Mayor's Challenge To Donate Ends Saturday

For the third year, Paula Dierenfeld will run a mile for every bag of food, personal items, or $10 donated to help needy area residents.

JOHNSTON, IA — So far, it looks like Paula Dierenfeld is going to be running more than 300 miles in 2018. For the third year, the Johnston mayor has issued a challenge to the community to help others in need through the Johnston Partnership.

For every bag of food or personal items given or $10 contribution made to the Partnership, Dierenfeld has pledged to run a mile. She'll begin logging the distance on Jan. 1. the deadline to donate toward her challenge is Saturday.

Dierenfeld ran 316 miles this year in response to community donations made in late 2016. Partnership staff is hoping to reach the 400 mark this year.

Cash contributions will help the partnership's food pantry purchase items in bulk and at reduced prices. Donations may be made online.

Suggested items for those who want to give needed supplies include:

  • Personal Items: Toilet paper, laundry detergent, Kleenex, deodorant, shampoo and diapers.
  • Food: Fresh and nutritious produce or healthy, non-perishable items that are not expired.

Donations may be taken to one of three locations: Johnston City Hall, 6221 Merle Hay Road; Johnston Public Library, 6700 Merle Hay Road; or the Johnston Partnership office, 5870 Merle Hay Road, Suite D.
