Whether you are completing a spring remodeling project or just clearing out unused stuff around your house, there’s a really great alternative to sending everything to the landfill! Habitat ReStore, right here in Central Iowa, accepts many things you might ordinarily put out on your curb on community clean up day, haul to Des Moines Scrub Days or throw in your truck to take to the landfill. Through this donation process, the amount of waste taken to the landfill can be significantly reduced by thousands of pounds.
What is Habitat ReStore?
The Des Moines Habitat ReStore, located at 2200 E. Euclid, sells new and used home improvement materials to the public at discounted prices. Contact ReStore with Questions or to Schedule a Pick-up
Des Moines Habitat ReStore encourages people to call 515.309.0224 with any questions about what may or may not be accepted. Also, if you have an item too large to transport to the ReStore, they will arrange to come and pick it up free of charge. Habitat ReStore is open six days a week, Monday-Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. What’s not accepted: household hazardous waste (including oil-based paints and stains). Household hazardous waste can be safely disposed of at the Metro Hazardous Waste Drop-Off in Bondurant.
Lane Stumme, Director of the Restore, offered this advice, “Simple donations to Habitat ReStore can help build a home. In 2013, we had more than 17,000 light fixtures donated and the sale of those re-purposed fixtures covered the cost of one Habitat for Humanity home. Wow! Talk about lighting up a life!”

Win, Win, Win!
So, before you kick your stuff to the curb, think about donating it to Habitat ReStore for a triple win. You win by getting rid of your stuff, families in need win because the ReStore helps to provide them with a new home and Mother Earth wins when we are able to repurpose, reuse or recycle materials instead of sending them to the landfill.
