Summit Students Collect More than 1,900 Items For Johnston Partnership

Students brought in donations during a week-long food drive.

From the Johnston Community School District:

A recent week-long food drive at Summit Middle School has resulted in more than 1,900 food items  and 242 winter clothing items collected for those in need. Shawna Beron, program director for the Johnston Partnership for a Health Community, said that the donations of the students made it possible for the food pantry to increase their box size to a four-day supply of food for families, providing them with more food each month. Beron also said that the donations came at a very good time for families in need. The food and clothing made it possible for:

  • 58 families to have warm winter clothing
  • 91 families to have a Thanksgiving meal on the table
  • 81 families be more food secure in November

Beron said the Partnership – and the community it serves – are grateful for the efforts of the Summit Middle School students and staff. The donation drive was organized by Matt Hiatt, a seventh grade language arts and social studies teacher.
