Two Ways You Can Help Get Rid of Unsightly Rubbish

Volunteer to Clean Up Parks & Streams

Do you visit a city park with your dog or child? Or, do you prefer to run, walk or bike on the trails? Or, maybe you simply sit and read a book near your favorite stream? Make that experience even better with these two opportunities aimed at getting rid of rubbish in your neighborhood.

Trash Bash - April 25
More than 1,500 volunteers are needed to help give our local parks a good spring cleaning at Des Moines Parks & Recreation's annual Trash Bash. The bash starts at 11:30 a.m. at Capital Square with a free lunch provided by Big City Burgers. After the bash, volunteers clean up designated areas throughout the metro. Since this year's event lands on Arbor Day, some teams will help with woodland restoration – clearing out the invasive species that take valuable nutrients from the plants needed to prevent soil erosion. Sign up to volunteer or get a team together from your workplace.

Thanks to our fellow event sponsors who make this happen every year: Des Moines Parks & Recreation, Big City Burgers, Cargill, Ernst & Young, Friends of the Des Moines Parks, ING, Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, Kum & Go, MidAmerican Energy, Polk County Conservation, Des Moines Public Works, Des Moines Water Works and Wells Fargo.

Adopt a Stream
And, while we have you thinking about cleaning up parks, you can clean up your local waterways through Adopt A Stream. Here's what you do:

1.     Find a stream and adopt it (recruit family, friends or co-workers)

2.     Plan your cleanup event (set the date and start organizing your team)

3.     Clean it up (enjoy the outdoors and make a difference)

4.     Brag about it (report your results, photos, bags of trash and weird items found) and we'll share the success

Don't feel ready to adopt? Join an existing team. Find a team in your neck of the woods and let them know you want to help out.
