Back to school time is here again. This is a very exciting time for children, but can be stressful for families. Here are sometips from Quakerdale Family Support Specialists on how you can make the transition to school easier for your child.

Helpful Tips for Parents, Part One:

Before school starts...

1. Start by talking with your child. Take time to ask questions about how they feel about school and listen to their questions and concerns.

2. Adjust their routine. Firm up their bed and mealtimes to reflect what they will experience once school starts. While this is happening, talk to them about how this will help them get ready for school.

3. Do activities that are geared towards reading, counting and learning. These activities help you connect with your child and let them know you’re interested and excited about their education. Keep an eye on the amount of screen time kids have and adjust it to the expectations for when school starts.

4. Connect with school staff and your child’s teachers. This can be done by going to registration, open houses and orientation activities. Also, find out the best way to stay connected with them, whether it’s by e-mail, phone or notes. Let them know if your child has any special sensitivity that may need some accommodation. As a parent you are your child’s biggest advocate!
