The first graders at Bowman Woods started off the school year as happy campers – in a creative “camping unit” filled with educational fun!
Students worked on camp-related, educational, activities during the first three weeks of school. The kids also learned about animals that you may encounter while camping. The first graders spent time making words out of marshmallows, writing camping tales, reading about camping, fishing for edible goldfish and discussing fractions, making animal crafts and much more.
The young students wrapped up the unit with a “real” camp out in the woods when Bowman Woods was transformed into their campground. The students especially enjoyed making yummy S'Mores, writing fishing tales, participating in a science experiment that involved microwaving marshmallows and unscrambling camping words. One of the highlights was sharing camp stories while snuggled up in sleeping bags around a campfire made of logs and tissue paper. It was also exciting to find sight words attached to stars on the ceiling using flashlights.
