In a race to beat Mother Nature, contractors completed the first main line pour in the 1100 block on Tuesday. This twenty-foot-wide section of paving is the second of five individual pours that must take place to complete the new 6th Avenue from curb to curb. The first pour included the south curb in both the 1000 &1100 blocks. This took place late last week. A portion of the north sidewalk was also poured this week in the 1000 block, below the Marion Depot. You'll notice several areas of recessed paving in the 1000 block. These are areas where brick will be installed. Culver's Landscaping is scheduled to begin brick installation on Monday.Â
Paving will continue over the next week. The final sidewalk ramps and crosswalk will be poured in the 10th Street intersection. Concrete will also be poured along the amenity zone in the 1000 block. The amenity zone is the section between the curb and the sidewalk. This area will then be bricked prior to planters being put in place. You'll also notice top soil being placed in the new planter beds located below the limestone wall. Additionally, crews will be focusing their efforts in the 11th Street intersection. Due to slower than anticipated progress by the contractor, the city is requiring that special accommodations be made for the Swamp Fox Festival scheduled for September 14-16.Â
Work is now occurring in Stages 2-4. Contractors have used approximately 72 of the allowed 100 working days. Work will continue in excess of the 100 working days. Rathje Construction Company will be penalized $500/day for each additional working day required to complete the project.
