As temperatures turn from boiling to blustery, Eastern Iowans are reminded of the fast-approaching holidays. It can be hard to save spare dollars for the season, especially for those with fixed incomes. Children of Promise Foster Grandparent Program offers senior citizens an opportunity to earn tax-free dollars to supplement the celebrations ahead.
Foster Grandparents serve in elementary and preschools throughout the Cedar Rapids corridor, lending extra support to struggling students. The grandparent-figures help young children improve social skills and make substantial progress in classroom subjects like reading and math. “Our Foster Grandparent Program is invaluable. Teachers appreciate the added classroom support. Students gain tremendous self-esteem. Foster Grandparents find a renewed sense of purpose. The wins are endless,” states Gina Tarullo, program coordinator. “We’re also able to pay our members for their service, which in these challenging economic times can be a lifesaver.”
Seniors working with the Children of Promise Foster Grandparent Program qualify to serve via income guidelines. Tarullo reports the program’s tax-free compensation is a blessing for many members. “Foster Grandparents appreciate the dollars they receive for their efforts. When monthly income is limited and necessity bills are looming, the money for extras is nearly non-existent. The compensation for Foster Grandparent service helps cover gifts for family, holiday meals, and improves overall quality of life.”
