Penalties Could Be Forthcoming as Marion's Central Corridor Construction Deadline Looms

The Marion Central Corridor Project allows subcontracting construction firms 100 days to finish before penalties kick in.

Construction on the Marion Central Corridor Project may take longer to finish than anticipated.

Nick Glew, of Anderson Bogart and Surveyors Inc., said the contractors hired for the construction will likely need more than the 100 days allowed to finish the current phase of construction, but it's unclear how much longer it will take.

Contractors have so far used around 67 of those 100 days. Once they go over, they'll be charged an additional $500 per day penalty by city officials.

  • Crews with Rathje Construction continued grading this week for sidewalks in the pedestrian area below the park wall. Irrigation was installed and bases for new electrical receptacles were put in place. These outlets will be available to support activities hosted in the new pedestrian plaza. Sidewalk paving will begin in this area over the next week. You'll also notice that forms are now in place for paving to begin along the library parking lot in the 1100 block.

  • Over the next week, it is anticipated that City Wide Construction will pour the south curb in both the 1000 and 1100 block. Curb will also be poured near the 10th Street intersection, along the driveway of the Marion Public Library. Storm sewer installation will also begin along the west half of 12th Street.

  • Work is now occurring in Stages 2-4. Contractors have used approximately 67 of the allowed 100 working days. At this time, it is anticipated that work will continue in excess of the 100 working days.
