Cedar Rapids Police requesting Donations for Gun Buy Back
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – June 10, 2013 – The Cedar Rapids Police is requesting the public’s help in sponsoring a gun buyback program. “Cedar Rapids Takes Aim at Guns” (CR TAG) is being implemented to remove guns from the street, and thereby reducing violent crime. The program also allows gun owners who no longer want guns in their home, to turn them in.
The gun buyback program allows guns to be turned in at designated locations this summer, where officers will verify that guns are in working order and then secure them. Anonymity is key to the success of the program; therefore, individuals will not be required to identify themselves or the source of the gun. Each individual presenting a gun in working order will be given a sealed envelope with a random gift card worth $100. (One gift card for each gun determined to be in working order).
Funding for this endeavor is solely by donations; no tax dollars will be used.
“Contributions from citizens, businesses and churches are integral to the success of this program, “ said Chief Wayne Jerman. “I am asking you to participate in this initiative by donating to CR TAG in the form of cash, check, or gift cards in any amount to purchase gas, groceries or use at department stores.’ The Cedar Rapids Police Department is “taking aim” at getting guns off of city streets.
In 2012 alone: 110 guns were recovered by the Police Department that were used in a crime, found, or kept for safekeeping. Many of these weapons were not returned to their rightful owner because the owner did not document the serial number. Cedar Rapids lost 13 citizens to suicide, six by handguns. Cedar Rapids had 64 substantiated incidents of shots fired, including 46 victims injured or with property damage, 23 of whom were struck by bullets.
Dates for CR Tag will not be set until money has been raised to support the program. Citizens interested in joining the fight to reduce violent crime in Cedar Rapids may send their donation in the form of gift card/check/cash to the Cedar Rapids Police Department, c/o CR TAG, 505 First St SW, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52404. They can also drop off donations at the Cedar Rapids Police
